Choosing the Right Holster (Part 1)

When it comes to carrying your firearm, the first thing to figure out is how you’re going to carry it. As a result, the holster you choose plays a big role in your comfort, safety, and how often you actually carry. That’s why I’m putting together this series—to help you pick the right setup for your needs.

In this first post, we’re breaking down the most common carry styles and what they’re best for. Whether you’re new to carrying or looking to upgrade, this should point you in the right direction.

Inside the Waistband (IWB)
IWB holsters ride inside your waistband and clip or strap to your belt. This is one of the most popular ways to carry, especially if concealment is the main priority. If you want to carry discreetly, IWB is probably the way to go.

Pros:

Great concealment

Tucks close to the body

Easy to cover with minimal concealed carry clothing

Cons:

Can take some getting used to

May feel tight when sitting for long periods

Some of our top IWB holsters:

Honor – Compact and built for all-day comfort

Liberty – Contoured for comfort and easy to take on and off

Old Glory – Slim, tuckable clip, great for appendix carry

Parade Rest – Designed for small-of-back carry with a palm-out draw

Outside the Waistband (OWB)
OWB holsters sit outside your pants and usually attach to your belt with a clip, strap or slot. Because they are worn outside the pants they are known for being more comfortable and allowing for a quicker draw. As a result, they’re great for open carry, range days, or concealed carry under an overshirt or jacket.

Pros:

Fast and natural draw

More comfortable for long wear

Good for bigger firearms

Cons:

Harder to fully conceal without layers

Might print under lighter shirts

Our top OWB holsters:

Freedom – Classic belt slide pancake

Gunner – Avenger style for secure, fast draw

Justice – Handmade paddle holster that’s easy to take on and off and super comfortable
