In our last post, we talked about the leather edger, one of the simplest but most important tools on the bench at Gear For Patriots. But an edger is only as good as its edge. That’s why keeping it sharp is part of the daily rhythm in our shop.
In this video, I’ll walk you through how I sharpen my edgers and explain why this step matters so much to the finished product.
🔧 Why We Sharpen Edgers Regularly
The edger only removes a sliver of leather but that sliver needs to be clean. A dull edger tears instead of slicing, leaves drag marks, and can ruin a good edge before you even get to sanding or burnishing.

Sharpening might seem like a small detail, but here’s what it affects:
Clean bevels that look professional
Smooth gliding action when edging thick leather or curves
Less hand fatigue
Edge consistency across every holster, belt, or mag pouch
🔪 How I Sharpen My Edgers
Everyone has their way, but here’s what works in my shop:
Strop first! Most of the time, a few passes on a compound-loaded strop is all it takes to keep the edge tuned up.
Ceramic or diamond rod – For heavier wear, I’ll gently touch up the inside of the edger with a fine rod.
Polish the channel – I make sure the groove inside the blade is clean and polished to reduce resistance.
Go gentle on the grinder – This is delicate work, done by feel.
“When the blade glides like butter—you know it’s ready.”

🧠 Why It Matters
Sharpening leatherworking tools isn’t about gear obsession, it’s about pride. If your tools are sharp, your work will show it. That’s what sets handcrafted gear apart, and it’s why we take the time to do it right, every time.
