When you’re working with thick, premium leather, your cut has to be right the first time. There’s no undo button when you’re shaping a holster or trimming exotic hide. That’s why the leatherworking cutting tools we use, especially our knives, matter so much.
At Gear For Patriots, we rely on a mix of traditional and modern leatherworking knives, each with a specific role in the shop. Every blade has a purpose, and each one helps us deliver the kind of precision and craftsmanship our gear is known for.

🔸 The Head Knife
There’s a reason the head knife is iconic in leathercraft. Its curved blade gives you complete control through long sweeping cuts. It’s versatile, precise, and powerful when kept sharp, which we do daily. Ours sees action from the very start of a holster or belt.
🔸 The Utility Knife
Simple, tough, and dependable. We use a heavy-duty utility knife for straight cuts, trimming templates, and quick adjustments. Nothing fancy, just a no-nonsense tool that stays razor-sharp with regular blade stropping. You’ll see this guy by our side whether we’re cutting veg tan or exotic skins.
🔸 The Homemade Snap Blade Knife
This one’s special. It’s handmade with a red and black G10 handle and uses snap-off blades for quick refreshes. AJ designed it specifically for delicate cuts or fine work where tight corners or clean lines matter. Bonus: it’s ergonomic and comfortable to use for long hours.
🔸 Tyrant Razor V3 by Exceed Designs
This is my favorite! It’s the Tyrant Razor V3 by Exceed Designs. This folding utility knife is beautifully machined, lightweight, and razor-sharp. It’s become my go-to for everything. It handles every cutting task from light, delicate leather to heavy veg tan and exotic hides like gator or elephant. One wrong move on those can cost you a $200 mistake, so having the right tool in your hand matters.
🔧 Every Cut Counts
The right blade makes the job smoother, faster, and cleaner. But more than that, it honors the material. Leather deserves respect, and we show that respect by using the right leatherworking cutting tools, made for the job and wielded by hands that know how to use them.
