Some leatherworking tools are loud and fast. Others are quiet, simple, and essential. The leather edger fits that last category. At Gear For Patriots, it’s one of the most used tools on our bench.
After cutting, sanding, and shaping a piece, the edger steps in to take sharp corners and soften them into smooth, comfortable curves. If you’ve ever run your thumb along one of our holster edges and thought, “That just feels right”, you’ve got the edger to thank.
🔸 What an Edger Does
A leather edger removes the sharp 90-degree corner from cutting or sanding. It doesn’t take off much, just a thin curl of leather. That small cut makes a big difference in both form and function. We use edgers before burnishing, edge paint, or polishing to give each piece a refined, professional finish.

🔸 Why It Matters
Comfort – Rounded edges don’t dig into your skin or snag clothing.
Durability – Beveled edges are less likely to fray or split over time.
Clean Finish – Gives the edge a consistent shape for burnishing and final detailing.
Whether it’s a Freedom holster, a mag pouch, or a gun belt, the edger is used early and often.
🔸 Our Favorite Edgers
We’ve used a bunch over the years. Our favorites include Barry King edgers , a few handmade Cocobolo-handled edgers, and a few old-school models that just refuse to quit. We keep them sharp, strop them often, and treat them like the precision instruments they are. Because when they’re dialed in, they glide through leather like butter.
“There is nothing like the feel of an edger gliding through the leather.”

🧠 It’s Not Flashy, But It’s Foundational
It might not get the spotlight, but the edger is one of those leatherworking tools that defines a true craftsman’s work. If the edge is consistent, it’s because someone cared enough to slow down and do it right.
At Gear For Patriots, we believe it’s the details that make the difference and the edger proves that, one perfect edge at a time.
